미국 캘리포니아 주 출신 펑키록 밴드 그린 데이는 오프스프링, 랜시드와 함께 1990년대 미국 내에서 펑크 록을 알린 밴드다. 이후 팝 펑크 밴드인 섬 41, 굿 샬럿, 블링크-182 등에도 영향을 미쳤다. 1987년 결성했고 1990년 1집 '39/Smooth' 발매했다. 그린데이가 큰 성공을 거둔 앨범은 1994년 발표한 3집 앨범 'Dookie'였으며, 《Dookie》는 다이아몬드 판매량을 인증받았으며, 그래미상 "최고의 얼터너티브 음악 음반(Best Alternative Music Album)"을 수상하였다. 지금까지 그린데이는 미국에서 2200만 장 이상의 음반 판매고를 올렸으며, 세계적으로 6000만 장 이상의 음반 판매고를 올렸다.
