두 번째 앨범 Ride the Lightning은 덴마크의 코펜하겐에 위치한 Sweet Silence Studio에서 녹음 하였다. 1984년 8월 발매된 이 앨범은 빌보드 200 차트에서 100위에 진입하였다. 그 중 앨범커버가 파란색이 아닌 초록색으로 프린트된 버전은 소량으로 찍어내서 현재 메탈리카의 팬들과 음반 수집가에게는 구하기 어려운 수집품이다. 수록곡은 〈For Whom the Bell Tolls〉, 〈Creeping Death〉(성경의 출애굽기 를 모티브로 한 곡), 〈Ride the Lightning〉, 연주곡인 〈The Call of Ktulu〉등이 있으며, 〈Ride the Lightning〉과 〈The Call of Ktulu〉는 메탈리카 앨범에서 마지막으로 수록된 머스테인의 참여작이다.
