An old king came and took her to his palace,

Than one day as the lark sang by the water
The god of the sun heard her in his flight
And her singing moved him so, he came and brought her

And he called to the lark in a voice both rough and tender,
"Come along,
Fly with me, my meadowlark,
Fly with me on the silver morning.
Past the sea where the dolphins bark,
We will dance on the coral beaches,
Make a feast of the plums and peaches,
Just as far as your vision reaches,

But the meadowlark said no,
For the old king loved her so,
She couldn't bear to wound his pride.
So the sun god flew away and when the king came down that day,
He found his meadowlark had died.
Every time I heard that part I cried.
And now I stand here, starry-eyed and stormy.
Oh, just when I thought my heart was finally numb,
A beautiful young man appears before me
Singing "Come
Oh, won't you come?"
And what can I do if finally for the first time
The one I'm burning for returns the glow?

초원종다리류 (조류) [草原 ── 類, meadowlark]
참새목(―目 Passeriformes) 찌르레기사촌과(―科 Icteridae) 초원종다리속(草原―屬 Sturnella)에 속하는 조류(鳥類). 이들은 뾰족한 부리를 가진 통통한 새로 몸길이는 20~80㎝이다. 생김새가 유사한 북아메리카산 2종(種)은 몸 위쪽에 갈색 줄무늬가 있고 노란색의 가슴에 V자형의 검은 줄무늬가 있고, 꼬리가 짧으며 바깥쪽 꼬리덮깃은 흰색을 띤다. 동부초원종다리(S. magna)는 캐나다 동부에서 브라질에 걸쳐 분포하며, 서부초원종다리(S. neglecta)는 캐나다 서부에서 멕시코(하와이에는 도입된 종)까지 분포한다. 전자는 단순한 4음절의 울음소리를 내고, 후자는 복잡한 피리소리 같은 울음소리를 낸다. 초원종다리류는 여름에는 주로 곤충, 가을과 겨울에는 주로 풀씨를 먹는다. 붉은가슴초원종다리(Pezites militaris)는 에콰도르 이남지역에 분포하며, 아열대에 분포하는 근연종인 쇠붉은가슴초원종다리(P. defilippi)는 가끔 붉은가슴검은꾀꼬리류(red-breasted blackbirds)와 혼성군을 이루기도 한다.
