리한나는 바베이도스 세인트마이클에서 태어나 16살이 되던 해 음악 활동을 펼치기 위해 프로듀서 에반 로저스와 함께 미국으로 떠났다. 이후 당시 데프잼의 대표자였던 제이-지 앞에서 오디션을 선보인 후, 레코드 계약을 체결했다
2005년 리한나 첫 데뷔 음반 Music of the Sun은 빌보드 200 10위에 올랐으며, 첫 싱글 "Pon de Replay"는 빌보드 핫 100 2위까지 진입. 두 번째 정규 음반 A Girl Like Me은 빌보드 200 5위까지 올랐으며, 싱글 "SOS"는 처음으로 빌보드 핫 100 1위를 차지했다.
