사냥꾼에게 쫓기는 사슴이 있었다. 포도나무를 발견한 사슴은 재빨리 포도나무 덩굴 속으로 숨었다. 사냥꾼들은 사슴을 발견하지 못하고 지나쳐 버렸다. 사슴은 안도하며 순간 허기가 져 포도나무 줄기를 먹기 시작한다. 이때 사냥꾼이 포도나무 덩굴 속에 숨어 있던 사슴을 발견한다. 사냥꾼은 활을 꺼내 화살을 쏘았고 사슴은 화살에 맞았다. 화살에 맞은 사슴은 죽어가며 이런 말을 남겼다. 

“내가 자초한 일이야. 날 구해준 포도나무를 해쳤으니 그 대가를 받은 것이다.”

은혜를 원수로 갚지 마라.

[올드코난 한마디]

이 이야기는 은혜를 갚아라, 은인에게 보답하라는 의미가 있지만 무엇보다 은혜를 원수로 갚지 말라는 교훈이 강하다. 살다 보면 어려운 일에 빠진 사람을 도와준 사람들이 오히려 피해를 보는 경우가 많다. 좋은 일을 했다면 당사자 혹은 사회(국가)에서 보답을 해주어야 하지만, 한국 사회는 작은 영웅들이 오히려 고통을 받고 있다. 대표적으로 세월호 참사 당시 시신 수색 작업을 하던 잠수사들에게 박근혜 정부는 범죄자 취급을 해 버렸다. 이런 사회에 정의와 원칙이 있을 수가 없다.

Perry 77. The Stag and the Vine

Do not mistreat those who help you. A Hart (stag) hides from hunters in vines. The Hart starts to nibble on the vines and gives himself away. Too bad.

1. Townsend version

A hart, hard pressed in the chase, hid himself beneath the large leaves of a Vine. The huntsmen, in their haste, overshot the place of his concealment. Supposing all danger to have passed, the Hart began to nibble the tendrils of the Vine. One of the huntsmen, attracted by the rustling of the leaves, looked back, and seeing the Hart, shot an arrow from his bow and struck it. The Hart, at the point of death, groaned: “I am rightly served, for I should not have maltreated the Vine that saved me.”

[Note: This fable is basically the same as The Goat and The Vine except for the animal involved.]

2. JBR Collection

A Hart being hard pursued by the hunters, hid himself under the broad leaves of a shady, spreading Vine. When the hunters had gone by, and given him over for lost, he thought himself quite secure, and began to crop and eat the leaves of the Vine. The rustling of the branches drew the eyes of the hunters that way, and they shot their arrows there at a venture, and killed the Hart. In dying, he admitted that he deserved his fate, for his ingratitude in destroying the friend who had so kindly sheltered him in time of danger.
