1969년 아일랜드 더블린에서 결성, 몇차례의 해체가 있었지만 현재도 활동중이다. 1기 당시 보컬이었던 Phil Lynott (필 리뇻, Philip Parris Lynott 1949.08.20~ 1986.01.04)이 활동 당시가 전성기였고 필은 알콜과 약물 중독으로 사망했다.
