콜롬비아 레코드의 경영진 토미 모톨라에 의해 1990년 데뷔, 데뷔 음반의 싱글 4개가 빌보드 핫 100에서 1위를 하는 기록을 남긴다.
아일랜드 레코드에 따르면 데뷔후 20년 동안 세계적으로 총 2억장의 음반, 싱글, 비디오 판매고를 올리고 있다. 2000년에는 월드 뮤직 어워드 에서 1990년대 사상 최다 앨범 판매량을 기록한 여가수로 선정되기도 했다. 미국 음반 산업 협회(RIAA)에 따르면 캐리는 6천 3백만 장의 출하량으로 세번째로 많이 판 여자 가수이다. 2008년을 기준으로 캐리는 지금까지 빌보드 핫 100 1위곡을 18개나 보유해 솔로 가수로는 최고의 기록을 보유하고 있다. 또한 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 50년간 성공적인 차트 기록을 올린 아티스트들의 기록을 분석해 순위를 발표했고, 머라이어 캐리는 6위에 올랐다. 상업적인 성과 이외에도 그래미 상에서 총 5번의 수상을 하였으며, Whistle Register같은 특이한 창법을 보유하고 있는 캐리는 다섯 옥타브의 성역을 갖고 있으며 멜리스마 및 다른 성법 치레를 많이 사용한다. 자세한 설명은 위키백과 참고
