올드코난의 이솝우화 제 85화 이기적인 어부 (Perry 13. The Fisherman)

올드코난 (Old Conan)이 재해석하는 현대판 이솝우화 (Aesop's Fables, Aesopica) => 원 저작자: Aesop; 참고 번역본 저자: 조지 파일러 타운센드(George Fyler Townsend, 1814-1900) 외 / 현재 알려진 이솝우화들을 현대적으로 해석해  소개해 드리겠습니다.

한 어부가 물고기를 잡기 위해 강으로 갔다. 어부는 가져간 그물을 흐르는 강을 가로질러 설치를 하고, 긴 끈에 돌멩이를 묶어 강을 휘젓으면서 그물 쪽으로 물고기를 몰기 시작했다. 이로 인해 강물은 흙탕물이 되어갔다.

이때 근처에 있던 한 이웃 사람이 이 광경을 보고 화가나 어부에게 다가가 거세게 따지며 항의 했다. 

“이렇게 강물을 더럽히면 다른 사람들이 이 물을 마실 수 있겠소! 지금 당장 그만두시오.”

그러자 어부가 이렇게 대꾸했다.

“미안지만 어쩔 수 없소. 이게 내 일이요. 당신이 물을 못 마시더라도 나는 물고기를 잡아야겠소.”

[올드코난 한마디]

이 이야기는 나의 이득을 위해서는 다른 누군가는 반드시 피해를 본다는 의미가 담겨있다. 그리고 그 피해를 줄이기 위해서는 서로 절충안을 모색해 봐야 한다는 충고가 담겨있다.

이명박의 대운하(4대강사업)이 가장 큰 예가 아닐까 생각해 본다.대운하로 시작해 4대강사업이라는 거창한 계획으로 국민들을 현혹했지만, 그로 인해 국가적으로 엄청난 손실을 끼쳤고, 농민들은 물론 주변 생태계 파괴로 지역 주민들에게 큰 피해를 주고 있다.

4대강 사업으로 이득을 본 소수들에 의해 절대 다수의 국민들이 손실을 본 것이다.

어부 한사람이 물고기를 잡겠다고 강을 더렵혔지만, 이로 인해 더 많은 사람들이 강물을 마실 수 없게 되었다. 이명박의 실정에 대해서는 반드시 처벌이 뒤따라야 할 것이다.

The Fisherman

A fisherman went to a river to fish. When he had laid his nets across the stream, he tied a stone to a long cord and beat the water on either side of the net to drive the fish into the meshes. One of the neighbors that lived nearby, seeing him thus employed, went up to him and blamed him exceedingly for disturbing the water and making it so muddy as to be unfit to drink. "I am sorry," said the fisherman, "that this does not please you, but it is by thus troubling the waters that I gain my living."

A Fisherman roiled the water pulling in his net. People complained but he said he must roil the water or have no fish to eat.

Some never understand the actions of others.

1. L’Estrange version

A fisher-man had order’d his net, for a draught, and still as he was gathering it up, he dash’d the water, to fright the fish into the bag. Some of the neighbourhood that look’d on, told him he did ill to muddle the water so, and spoil their drink. Well (says he) but I must either spoil your drink, or have nothing to eat my self.

Moral: There’s no engaging the mobile in a sedition till their heads are so muddled first with frights and visions, that they can neither see, hear, nor understand.

2. JBR Collection (The Fisherman and Troubled Water)

A certain Fisherman having laid his nets in a river, took a long pole, and fell a-beating the water, to frighten the fish into his nets. One of the people who lived thereabout came and said to him, with surprise, “Why, what are you doing there, splashing and dashing the water about at that rate? You muddle the stream, and completely spoil our drink.” “Well,” replied the Fisherman, “all I know is, I must either spoil your drink, or have nothing to eat.”

3. Piscator Aquam Verberans

Piscator in fluvio quodam piscabatur. Extensis autem retibus et fluxu comprehenso utrinque, funi alligato lapide, aquam verberabat ut pisces, fugientes incaute, in retia inciderent. Cum quidam vero ex iis qui circa locum habitabant id eum facere videret, increpabat utpote fluvium turbantem et claram aquam non sinentem bibere. Et is respondit, “Sed nisi sic fluvius perturbetur, me oportebit esurientem mori.”
