어느날 여우와 원숭이가 함께 여행길을 나섰다. 여행 도중에 어느 큰 묘지 앞을 지나가게 되었다. 잘난척하고 싶어진 원숭이가 여우에게 이렇게 말했다. “여기 있는 모든 것들이 바로 나의 조상들의 명예를 기리기 위해 만들어진 것들이야. 우리의 조상은 그 시대에 위대한 명성을 얻었던 분들이셨지.” 원숭이의 허세에 여우가 비웃으며 이렇게 대답했다.

“그래, 죽은자들은 말이 없지. 무덤 속에 잠든 이들이 너의 거짓말을 따질 수 있겠니.”

거짓은 탄로나는 법이다.

[올드코난 한마디]

여우에게 자신의 조상을 자랑하려한 원숭이를 보면 생각나는 사람이 있다. 새누리당 김무성 대표다. 김무성의 친아버지 김용주는 친일매국노였다. 역사에 분명히 기록된 의심의 여지가 없는 친일파였다. 이런 자를 김무성은 애국자로 둔갑시키려 하고 있다. 원숭이가 여우를 속이려들지만 여우에게 비웃음을 당했듯이, 김무성과 그의 애비 김용주는 비난을 받아야 한다.

The Fox and Monkey

A Fox and Monkey passed a cemetery. Monkey told the Fox these were ancestors. Fox pointed out this was a likely story but nobody there could refute it.

A false tale often betrays itself.

1. Townsend version

A fox and a Monkey were traveling together on the same road. As they journeyed, they passed through a cemetery full of monuments. “All these monuments which you see,” said the Monkey, “are erected in honor of my ancestors, who were in their day freedmen and citizens of great renown.” The Fox replied, “You have chosen a most appropriate subject for your falsehoods, as I am sure none of your ancestors will be able to contradict you.”

Moral: A false tale often betrays itself.

2. Simia et Vulpes, Iter Facientes

Vulpes et simia eundem in locum faciebant iter. Cum per sepulchra eas via duceret, simia ad vulpem “Omnes,” inquit, “quos hic sepultos vides, parentum meorum liberti erant.” “Callide,” respondet vulpes, “mentita es. Nec enim horum quisquam, qui humati sunt, te potest convincere.”
