올드코난 (Old Conan)이 재해석하는 현대판 이솝우화 (Aesop's Fables, Aesopica) => 원 저작자: Aesop; 참고 번역본 저자: 조지 파일러 타운센드(George Fyler Townsend, 1814-1900) 외 / 현재 알려진 이솝우화들을 현대적으로 해석해 소개해 드리겠습니다.
올드코난의 이솝우화 제 106화 아폴로 신과 사기꾼 (Perry 36. Evil-wit) 혹은 신전에 사기꾼 (An Imposter to The Oracle)
한 사기꾼이 있었다. 어느날 사기꾼은 아폴로 신을 속이고 싶다는 생각이 들었다.
참새 한 마리를 잡은 사기꾼은 외투 속에 감추고 Delphos(델포이) 신전을 찾아가 아폴로 신을 만난다. 한 손을 외투 주머니 속에 넣어 참새를 잡은 채로 아폴로 신에게 이렇게 물었다.
“아폴로 신이시여, 내 손 안에 있는 참새가 죽었나요? 살았나요?”
사기꾼의 의도는 분명했다. 만일 아폴로 신이 살았다고 하면 참새를 죽일 것이고, 죽었다고 답하면 살려줄 생각이었다. 사기꾼의 마음을 간파한 아폴로 신은 이렇게 말했다.
“그 새가 살고 죽고는 오직 너의 마음에 달렸다. 알아서 하거라.”
신을 조롱하지 마라.

이 이야기는 신을 비웃는 인간들에게 신들은 인간들의 위에 있다는 종교적인 교훈도 있다.
세상을 살다보면 많은 사람들을 접하게 된다. 이들 중 대답할 수 없는 질문을 하는 자는 함부로 믿지 말라는 충고가 담겨 있다.
사기꾼이 참새가 죽었는지 살았는지를 물었을때, 어느 한가지 대답을 하려들면 이미 속은 것이다.
아폴로 신의 말대로 "니 마음대로 해라"라며 무시를 해 버리는 게 최선이다.
잠시 이명박 이야기를 해본다. 우리는 MB를 무시했어야 했다.
그의 성공 신화에 현혹되었고, 조작된 자료들로 4대강과 자원외교 비리를 저질렀다. MB가 이런 짓을 대범하게 저리른 것은 이명박을 찍으면 대한민국의 경제가 살아나고 우리들 삶이 훨씬 나아질 것 같은 착각에 빠졌다. 결과는 어떤가. 더 어려워졌다.
이명박의 질문에 우리는 답이 있다고 착각을 했던 것이다.
이명박 5년의 교훈은 믿을 수 없는 자의 말은 무시해 버리는 게 최선이었다는 점이다.

A fellow tried to trick the Oracle by holding a bird under his coat and asking if it was alive or dead. The Oracle said it was whatever the man wanted.

1. L’Estrange version
There was a certain bantering droll that took a journey to Delphos, a purpose to try if he could put a trick upon Apollo.
He carry’d a sparrow in his hand under his coat, and told the god, I have somewhat in my hand, says he, is it dead or living?
If the oracle should say ’twas dead, he could chew it a live; if living, ’twas but squeezing it, and then ’twas dead.
Now he that saw the malice of his heart gave him this answer: It shall e’en be which of the two you please; for ’tis in your choice to have it either the one or the other.
Moral: Presumption leads people to infidelity in a trace, and so by insensible degrees to atheism: for when men have once cast off a reverence for religion, they are come within one step of laughing at it.
2. Apollo et Vir Facinorosus
Quidam vir facinorosus se contulit Delphos, tentaturus Apollinem, sub pallio habens passerculum quem pugno suo tenebat. Et accedens ad tripodas, eum interrogabat, dicens, “Quod in mea dextra habeo, vivitne, an est mortuum?” (prolaturus passcerculum vivum, si ille respondisset mortuum; rursus prolaturus mortuum, si respondisset vivum, etenim statim eum occidisset clam sub pallio priusquam proferret). At Deus, hominis calliditatem subdolam intellegens, dixit, “O consultor, utrum mavis facere facito – etenim est penes te – et proferto sive vivum, sive mortuum, quod habes in tuis manibus.”
Moral: Haec fabula innuit nihil latere neque fallere mentem divinam.
