올드코난의 이솝우화 제 103화 살인자 (Perry 32. The Murderer)
살인을 저지르고 도피중이던 살인범이 있었다. 살인범에 의해 목숨을 잃은 피해자의 가족들로 피해 도주하던 살인범은 나일강에 도착하게 된다. 그리고 사자를 마주치게 된 살인범은 놀라 옆에 나무 위로 잽싸게 올랐다. 그런데 그 나무에는 큰 뱀이 있었다. 살인범은 뱀에 놀라 성급히 나무에서 내려오다 그만 강에 빠지게 된다. 그리고 그 강에는 큰 악어가 있었다. 굶주렸던 악어는 살인범을 잡아 먹아 먹고 말았다.
살인자는 숨을 곳이 없다.
[올드코난 한마디]
이 이야기에는 죄를 짓지 말라는 교훈이 담겨있다. 살인범은 사자를 마주쳤을때와 뱀을 봤을 때 좀 더 침착했더라면 강물에 빠져 악어의 밥이 되지 않았을 것이다. 살인범은 죄를 저질렀다는 데에서 오는 두려움 때문에 쉽게 이성을 잃었고, 결국 자기 자신이 해를 입게 된 것이다.
도둑이 제발저린다라는 속담과도 유사한 점이 있다.
최근들어 이명박 전 대통령과 일명 친이계라는 정치인들의 대외 활동이 늘어가고 있음을 느낀다. 또 내년 총선에서 출마를 하려는 조짐들이 보인다. 자신들의 행위에 대해 조금의 책임감도 없는 이들에게 우리 국민은 악어가 되어 이들을 단죄해야 하지 않을까.

A Manslayer (murderer) was pursued. When at the Nile River a Lion chased him up a tree where a serpent forced him to jump in the river and be eaten.
Murderers have no place to hide.
1. Townsend version
A man committed a murder, and was pursued by the relations of the man whom he murdered. On his reaching the river Nile he saw a Lion on its bank and being fearfully afraid, climbed up a tree. He found a serpent in the upper branches of the tree, and again being greatly alarmed, he threw himself into the river, where a crocodile caught him and ate him. Thus the earth, the air, and the water alike refused shelter to a murderer.
2. Crocodilus et Homicida
Caedem quidam fecerat, eumque propterea hominis interfecti cognati persequebantur. Ad Nilum itaque cum pervenisset, leonem obvium videns ac timore correptus, in arborem adscendit. Ibi vero cum anguem summis in ramis delitescentem invenisset, novo metu perculsus, se in flumen proiecit, ibique a crocodilo devoratus est.
Moral: Fabula significat quod nec terra, nec aer, neque ipsum aquae elementum, nullus denique locus homicidas defendit.
