올드코난의 이솝우화 제 112화 나이팅게일 새와 박쥐 (Perry 48. The Nightingale and the Bat)
창가에 있는 새장 안에 나이팅게일 새 한 마리가 있었다. 이 새는 늘 밤에는 울었지만, 낮에는 아무말도 없었다. 이를 이상하게 여긴 박쥐가 어느날 조심스레 다가가 새에게 물었다.
“당신은 왜 매일 낮에는 침묵하고 밤에만 노래를 하고 있나요?”
나이팅게일이 대답했다. “이유는 낮에 울다가 그만 새잡이 사낭꾼에게 잡히고 말았답니다. 그래서 조심하기 위해 밤에만 울고 있답니다.”
나이팅게일의 대답에 박쥐는 이렇게 말했다. “이미 늦었네요. 잡히기 전에 조심했어야지요. ”
소 잃고 외양간 고치는 격이다.

이 이야기는 매사에 늘 조심하라는 충고와, 함부로 나대지마라, 자랑하지 말라는 뜻도 담겨있다. 나이팅게일 새는 자신의 아름다운 목소리가 다른 이들에게 즐거움을 줄 수 있지만, 반면 이를 탐내는 욕심 많은 인간에게는 소유욕을 불러 올 수 있다는 것을 알지 못했다. 누군가나 나의 소중한 것 혹은 나의 재능 등을 가지려들거나, 시기심을 가질 수 있다. 이를 조심하라는 게 이 에피소드의 교훈이다.

Perry 48. The Nightingale and the Bat
A Bat asked a Nightingale singing at night why he did not sing by day. He answered that when he sang by day he was caught so now only sings at night.
A wrong reason is worse than no reason.
1. L’Estrange version
As a nightingale was singing in a cage at a window, up comes a bat to her, and asked her why she did not sing in the day, as well as in the night. Why (was the nightingale) I was catch’d singing in the day, and so I took it for a warning. You should have thought of this then, says t’other, before you were taken; for as the case stands now, y’are in no danger to be snapt singing again.
Moral: A wrong reason for the doing of a thing is worse then no reason at all.
2. Vespertilio et Merula
Suspensa ante fenestram in cavea, merula noctu cantabat. Ad quam advolans, vespertilio rogat cur non die potius canat, et noctu acquiescat. “Quia enim,” inquit illa, “interdiu cantitans, prodita et capta fui, itaque nunc, malo edocta, die taceo.” Tum vespertilio “Sed tu enim,” inquit, “sero caves, quam priusquam apprehendereris tacere oportuit.”
