어느 시골에 늙은 과부가 있었다. 그녀에게는 시중을 드는 젊은 하녀 두명이 있었다. 과부는 닭이 울면 이른 아침에도 하녀들을 깨우고 일을 시키고는 했다. 아직 젊은 하녀들은 이런 날들이 계속되자 피곤하고 힘이 들었고 인내심이 폭발할 지경이었다. 결국에는 하녀들을 수탉을 죽이면 과부가 자신들을 깨우지 않을 것이라는 생각에 닭을 죽이고 만다.
하지만, 하녀들에 더 큰 시련을 안겨주었다. 닭의 울음소리에 잠을 깼던 과부는 닭이 울지 않자 한밤중에 더 일찍 일어나 하녀들을 깨우고 일을 시켰던 것이다.

이 이야기는 제 꾀에 제가 넘어간다고 하는 속담과 유사한 교훈이 담겼다. 하지만, 과연 하녀들을 비난할 수 있을까. 새벽부터 하녀들을 깨워 일을 시키는 과부가 더 나쁜 사람이 아니었을까. 닭을 죽일 수 밖에 없었던 하녀들이 나는 더 불쌍하다는 생각을 해 본다.

A widow was served by maidens awakened by a rooster. They killed the rooster. The widow then woke them earlier.

A neat Widow had two Maidens to wait on her. She woke them every morning when the cock crowed. The Maidens resolved the kill the cock who roused their mistress so early. They did this, but found matters worse. No longer able to tell time from the cock, the Widow woke them for work in the middle of the night.
1. Townsend version
A Widow who was fond of cleaning had two little Maidens to wait on her. She was in the habit of waking them early in the morning, at cockcrow. The Maidens, aggravated by such excessive labor, resolved to kill the cock who used their mistress so early. When they had done this, they found that they had only prepared for themselves greater troubles, for their mistress, no longer hearing the hour from the cock, woke them up to their work in the middle of the night.
2. JBR Collection (The Old Woman and Her Maids)
A certain Old Woman had several Maids, whom she used to call to their work every morning at the crowing of the Cock. The Maids, finding it grievous to have their sweet sleep disturbed so early, killed the Cock, thinking when he was quiet they should enjoy their warm beds a little longer. The Old Woman, vexed at the loss of the Cock, and suspecting them to be concerned in it, from that time made them rise soon after midnight.
