올드코난의 이솝우화 제 122화 바다의 두 원수 (Perry 68. The Enemies) * Two Enemies at Sea
서로를 죽이고 싶도록 증오하는 두명의 원수들이 하필이면 같은 배를 타고 항해를 하게 되었다. 이들은 서로 멀리 떨어지기 위해 한 사람은 뱃 머리로 갔고, 다른 이는 맨 뒤로 가 자리를 잡고 서로를 쳐다 보지도 않았다. 그렇게 항해를 하던 중 갑자기 큰 풍랑을 만났다. 갑작스런 폭풍우에 배는 침몰직전 상황까지 이르렀고, 이때 배의 후미에 있던 한 사람이 배를 조종하고 있던 선장에게 어느쪽이 먼저 침몰할 것 같냐고 물었다. 선장은 뱃 머리부터 침몰할 것 같다고 답해 주었다. 그러자 그 사람은 이렇게 말했다.
“다행이네. 그 자식 먼저 죽겠구만.”
적의 파멸이 무조건 나의 만족이 될 수 있을까.
[올드코난 한마디]
이 이야기는 나이를 먹을수록 많은 생각을 하게 만든다. 이들 두명의 원수는 결국 침몰해 죽을 운명이다. 같이 살 방도를 생각한 것이 아니라, 나의 원수가 먼저 죽기만을 바라고 있다. 이는 지극히 감정적인 생각이고, 옳지 않다. 그럼에도 사람은 비이성적인 판단을 내리고는 한다.
한국의 보수는 친박과 비박으로 나위었다. 이들은 원래 원수지간은 아니었을 것이다. 누가 이들을 적으로 만들었을까. 그 원인은 무시하고, 당장 비바과 친박이라서 하나를 제거해야할 상대로 보고 있다.
누군가가 싫어질 수는 있지만, 왜 그래야 하는지, 나쁜 감정을 다 털고 관계를 개선할 수 없는지 대화로 충분히 해결하려는 노력을 해야 하지 않을까.

Two enemies were on a ship; one up front, the other in the back. The ship was sinking and the enemy at back was delighted he would see the other sink first.

1. Townsend version
Two men, deadly enemies to each other, were sailing in the same vessel. Determined to keep as far apart as possible, the one seated himself in the stem, and the other in the prow of the ship. A violent storm arose, and with the vessel in great danger of sinking, the one in the stern inquired of the pilot which of the two ends of the ship would go down first. On his replying that he supposed it would be the prow, the Man said, “Death would not be grievous to me, if I could only see my Enemy die before me.”
2. L’Estrange version (Two Travellers and A Bag of Money)
There were two enemies at sea in the same vessel, the one at the ships head, the other at the stern. It blew a dreadful storm, and when the vessel was just ready to be swallow’d up, one of ’em ask’d the master, which part of the ship would be first under water; so he told him the t’other end would sink first. Why then, says he, I shall have the comfort of seeing my enemy go before me.
Moral: ‘Tis a wretched satisfaction, that a revengeful man takes, even in the losing of his own life, provided that his enemy may go for company.

In eadem navi vehebantur duo qui inter se capitalia odia exercebant. Unus eorum in prora, alter in puppi residebat.
