이솝우화 제 56화 과부와 암탉 (Perry 58. The Overfed He)

올드코난 (Old Conan)이 재해석하는 현대판 이솝우화 (Aesop's Fables, Aesopica) => 원 저작자: Aesop; 참고 번역본 저자: 조지 파일러 타운센드(George Fyler Townsend, 1814-1900) 외 / 현재 알려진 이솝우화들을 현대적으로 해석해  소개해 드리겠습니다.

올드코난의 이솝우화 쉰 여섯번째 이야기 제 56화 비만해진 암탉 (Perry 58. The Overfed Hen) *The Widow and the Hen)

어느 시골에 외로운 과부가 살고 있었다. 그녀의 유일한 가축은 암탉 한 마리였다. 암탉은 매일 달걀 한 개씩을 낳아 주어 과부에게는 여간 고마운 존재가 아니다. 어느날, 과부는 암탉에게 더 많은 먹이를 주면 하루에 알을 두 개씩 낳지 않을까 하는 생각을 갖게 되었다. 그날부터 과부는 암탉에게 평소보다 2배 많은 모이를 주었다.

하지만, 얼마후 암탉은 몸이 비대해지면서 거동조차 귀찮아했고 얼마안가 한 개의 알도 낳지 못하게 되었다.

[올드코난 한마디]

이 이야기는 미련한 자의 지나친 욕심을 경계하는 교훈과, 모든 일에는 순서가 있으니 단계적으로 하라는 교훈 또한 있다. 그리고 착취는 한계가 있다는 충고 또한 담겨있다.

최근 이명박 정부 당시 자원 외교에 대한 비판이 거세다.

왜 이런 일들이 벌어졌는가.

이명박은 능력에 비해 욕심과 과시욕이 많은 사람이다.

암탉은 하루에 달걀 한개를 낳듯이, 차근차근 일을 진행했어야 할 일들을 이명박은 성급하게 진행했고 대통령의 명령이니 공기업과 관료들은 손실을 볼 걸 알면서도, 해외 자원 사업에 헛돈을 써 댄 것이다.

하면 된다는 말은 할 수 있는 일을 했을때 된다는 뜻이다.

무조건 된다고 말하는 자들 중에서 정말 모든 일을 제대로 했는지를 파악해 보면 모두 다 헛소리임을 알게 될 것이다. 이명박은 할 수 없는 일, 해서는 안되는 일들을 저질렀다.

Perry 58. The Overfed Hen

A Woman wanted two rather than one egg a day from her Hen. She overfed the Hen which caused the Hen to stop laying eggs entirely.

Set bounds to our desires and content ourselves when we are well.

1. Townsend version

A woman possessed a Hen that gave her an egg every day. She often pondered how she might obtain two eggs daily instead of one, and at last, to gain her purpose, determined to give the Hen a double allowance of barley. From that day the Hen became fat and sleek, and never once laid another egg.

2. JBR Collection (The Woman and The Fat Hen)

A Woman had a Hen that laid an egg every day. The Fowl was of a superior breed, and the eggs were very fine, and sold for a good price. The Woman thought that by giving the Hen double as much food as she had been in the habit of giving, the bird might be brought to lay two eggs a day instead of one. So the quantity of food was doubled accordingly, and the Hen grew very fat, and gave over laying altogether.

3. L’Estrange version

A good woman had a hen that laid her every day an egg. Now she fancy’d to her selfe, that upon a larger allowance of corn, this hen might be brought in time to lay twice a day. She try’d the experiment; but the hen grew fat upon’t, and gave quite over laying.

Moral: He that has a great deal already, and would have more, will never think he has enough ’till he has all; and that’s impossible: wherefore we should set bounds to our desires, and content our selves when we are well, for fear of losing what we had.

4.Avara et Gallina

Vidua habebat avem, quae ei quotidie unum pareret ovum. Largius ergo istam incepit alere, existimans fore ut, abundantius nutrita, duo pareret ova. Avis contra, nimiis alimentis facta obesior, ne unum quidem, ut antea, eniti potuit ovum.

Moral: Qui maiora concupiscunt, parva quae possident saepissime solent amittere.
